The Window Between Site Visit and Decision
When a homeowner asks for quotes on electrical work, they're usually talking to more than one electrician. They visit a few profiles, make a few calls, and wait to see what comes back.
There's a window — a period of genuine openness — during which they haven't mentally committed to anyone. Once they receive a quote they're happy with, that window starts to close. They start thinking of that electrician as their electrician. The next quote has to be noticeably better to shift their thinking.
The electrician who sends a professional, complete, easy-to-read estimate first has a real advantage — even if they're not the cheapest.
How Fast Is Fast Enough?
The short answer: same day, ideally within a few hours of the site visit.
Here's a rough framework:
- Same day (within a few hours): Excellent. You're almost certainly first or second. The client's interest is fresh and they're likely still actively comparing.
- Next morning: Good. Still timely for most jobs.
- 2–3 days: You're probably trailing at least one other quote. Not impossible to win, but you're working uphill.
- A week or more: In most cases, the job is already gone or the client has lost momentum entirely.
These aren't hard rules — complex commercial jobs can take longer to price and clients expect that. But for the bread-and-butter residential work most solo electricians do, speed is a genuine competitive advantage.
Why Speed Signals Competence
When you send a quote quickly, you're communicating something beyond just being fast. You're telling the client:
- You took the job seriously from the moment you left their driveway
- You're organised and efficient
- You're probably responsive during the job too — if something comes up, you won't disappear for days
These are exactly the qualities that make a client feel safe handing over a deposit. The inverse is also true: a slow quote creates mild but real doubt. Are they disorganised? Too busy? Do they actually want this job?
The Real Reason Quotes Are Slow
Most electricians aren't slow because they're lazy or don't care. They're slow because quoting is a pain:
- You're tired after a full day on the tools
- You have to find the client's details, remember what was discussed, calculate materials, look up prices
- You have to format it into something that doesn't look embarrassing
- Then you have to actually send it
That whole process — done manually — can take 30–45 minutes per quote. After a long day, it's easy to say "I'll do it tomorrow morning," and tomorrow morning becomes the day after.
How to Quote Faster Without Rushing
The goal isn't to rush — it's to remove the friction so that quoting doesn't feel like a task you have to psych yourself up for.
Build a price book
Your most common jobs — outlet installations, fan installations, switchboard upgrades, cable runs — should be in a price book with pre-set rates. When you build a quote, you're tapping items, not calculating from scratch. This alone cuts quoting time dramatically.
Capture the information on site
Make a habit of noting exactly what you discussed with the client before you leave — line items, scope, any special conditions. The longer you leave it, the more you're relying on memory and the longer the quote takes.
Send it before you leave
For straightforward jobs, you should be able to build and send the estimate while you're still in the driveway. You already have the information, you know what needs to go on it, and the client is right there. Sending it on the spot — and telling the client "I've just sent your estimate" — makes an immediate and impressive impression.
Separate quoting from admin
You don't need to do your invoicing and filing at the same time you send the quote. Quoting is a short, focused task. Keep it that way.
The Compounding Effect
Speed is not just about winning one job. It's a habit that compounds.
The electricians who consistently send fast, professional quotes are the ones clients recommend to friends. When someone asks "do you know a good sparky?", the answer is almost always the tradesperson who was easy to deal with — and that starts with how quickly they sent the quote.
VoltEstimate is built to make quoting fast enough that you can do it before you leave the driveway — price book, professional formatting, and one-tap sending all in one place.
